SOMOS ARTIST OF THE YEAR
your virtual festival soul sparkers

featuring
nanibah chacon & “aqua es vida”

Nanibah “Nani” Chacon, is a Diné (Navajo) and Chicana artist. Nani is most noted for her female figurative works, which utilize bold colors and an illustrative format to create commentary on Native, Chicana and American cultures. Nani was born in Gallup, NM and grew up in both Chinli, AZ and Corrales, NM. Her clan is To dich iini (bitter water) and born of Chicano people. At 16 she was introduced to graffiti and began a career as a graffiti writer and continued this practice for the next 10 years. Nani continues to work in the field of large murals, with content addressing social, environmental and political justices that affect Native peoples.

Nani has more than twenty years of experience painting in public spaces. Early on, she began as a graffiti artist, learning and growing from the challenges the medium presented. She worked to develop her technical skills as a large-scale painter, excelling in scale, color, design, composition and style. The experience also taught her about the public connection to art, marginalization in a public space, and how to reclaim space through community-based art. Nani received a Bachelor of Arts in education, and has always felt that the importance of developing a skill and practice was to one day be able to share that knowledge with others.

Nani’s site-specific public art projects are community focused in that she directly collaborates and engages with the people from the community in which the work will be placed. Through conversations and research, her work reflects the landscape and people of that space. Chacon’s murals often address Indigenous thought, aesthetics, and identity, and, in effect, offer visibility to and empower Indigenous people. She places deep value in creating artworks that are accessible and offer the viewer a space in which they might contemplate important cultural and political connotations as they relate to the place in which the work is exhibited. She is a 2020 Mentor Artist Fellow to Lynnette Haozous (who, as by Albuquerque magic it happens, was SOMOS Artist of the Year 2019), through the Native Arts & Cultures Foundation.

“Agua es Vida” was originally commissioned and painted as a mural on the El Paso Museum of Art in 2016 : the content of the work honoring the historical and traditional connection we have with water, the water that lives in us, is the water of centuries..... Nani graciously licensed her gorgeous imagery to SOMOS **Reimagined**, in this a year of infinite fluidity.

Amy Biehl High School Students & Staff
made at amy biehl high school, albuquerque
Amy Biehl High School (ABHS) is a public charter high school located in the heart of downtown Albuquerque. As an urban school, one of the more popular ways for our students to get around is by skateboard. Skateboarding is not only a form of transportation, it is also a form of mindfulness as it takes concentration and focus. ABHS students and staff share their passion for skateboarding (and lunch!) by creating a functional art installment – a skate-able lunch table and bench. The table and bench serve as canvases for our students to paint their own artwork on and is displayed outside of Amy Biehl High School on the corner of 4th and Gold Ave. By watching our instructional video, you too can create your own skate-able work of art at home!

Keshet Dance Company
made at keshet center for the arts, albuquerque
Keshet Company Dancers choreographed, filmed, and produced a 10 minute original work, filmed in front of the Keshet Center for the Arts, which highlights the largest mural in the State of NM and the gorgeous skies of our city. The choreography was developed and executed in a socially distanced manner, via a progressive "storyline" from west to east across the building, following the loose storyline of the mural itself. Dancers use imagery from the mural to develop the original choreography for this "love letter from Keshet" to the rest of the community, which uses both video footage OF the dancers and go-pro footage BY the dancers.

Mitch Berg, Fuego Art Space
made at fuego art space, albuquerque
A river-crossing story. A cast of characters via kinetic/movable sculpture. These nearly life-sized sculptures are made from found objects, metal, wood, and fused glass. Like puppets, their joints are articulated to create movement and animation. These sculptural puppets enact a mythical journey that takes the characters from one river bank to the other, while animals and spirits invoke other realms. The story explores themes of creative transcendence, interspecies companionship, love and magic. The puppets were hand built at Mitch’s studio, Fuego Art Space, using methods and a style developed over his twenty years of art-making. Sculptural props such as animals, a boat, and musical instruments further animate this story which is performed on the banks and waters of the Rio Grande. Mary Kate Mendoza collaborated to produce the animation videos. The puppets are installed as a diorama in front of Fuego Art Space near the river in Albuquerque's South Valley.

Permalove Collective {always changing and growing}
made at all over . . . we follow the trust // vibrance!, albuquerque
Born 17 years ago through the mysteriously revealed concept of *glācis*, a neutral area separating conflicting forces, Permalove Collective is the network of trust and mutual support shared by those who consciously choose to operate in this channel through which energy flows more easily. Beginning where we are, here in Albuquerque, our joyful responsibility is simply to illuminate the beautiful web that already connects us and has us showing up and growing just because we care about and are *moved* by each other. In this network, it is our generosity and integrity that get us the furthest; the rewards unexpected and priceless. In this documentary, we demonstrate, through living examples, some of the countless *exchanges of heart* taking place in our community, and how, with Permalove's non-monetary, membership and values-based social service platform, we are nurturing even more of these connections, while bringing forth our own purposes and desires into the mix. Time is art . . . let’s use it well, expand the circle, and see what happens!

SouthWest Organizing Project
made at swop, 211 10th street sw, albuquerque
SWOP presents a community / youth mural entitled "Super Warrior Bros." This mural is a take on the classic video game and is combined with Southwest / Indigenous culture and symbolism. The mural is painted in the "alley" leading to SWOP's courtyard. There is an established entrance and exit point to assist with COVID guidelines. The mural is placed on both the wall and sidewalk, transforming it into a lifesize video game screen. There are 3d elements as well. This theme is part of a living series that incorporates community, art, and culture. As part of our community organizing, we also feature important messaging which will be embedded into the artwork, such as get out the vote.

Red Planet Presents: Electric Chaco
made at red planet, albuquerque
Building on the physical space and narrative of Electric Chaco, Red Planet Books and Comics develops the next chapter of the story. Beginning in the present day, we are visited by a stranger who gives clues to Electric Chaco and the alternate timelines that exist. The style is iPhone storytelling (like some of the Tik Tok narrative forms) to utilize existing technologies in a dynamic way. It is made and woven together by Dr. Lee Francis 4 and Associates.

Reyes Padilla
made at sisterbar, albuquerque
Working with the community as inspiration, Reyes Padilla creates an exterior mural that translates the community’s hopes and intentions for the future as we move forward as a society beyond racial injustice and the current state of the world. By organizing and documenting socially distant discussions with primarily youths in the community, he shares their hopes for the future and synesthetically transcribes these visions into an abstract mural. Beyond showing the progress of the installation, the video documentation gives the community a platform to speak out. The mural will serve as a permanent reminder of the hopes we strive to achieve.

ALMA (Apprenticeships for Leaders in Mosaic Arts)
made at south valley, 12 & mountain and beyond, albuquerque
“Did you hear about the ‘sunflower’ that grew from a crack
in the concrete?
Proving nature's laws wrong it learned 2 walk
without having feet
Funny it seems but by keeping its dreams
it learned 2 breathe fresh air
Long live the ‘sunflower’ that grew from concrete
when no one else even cared!”*
We see sunflowers as a prominent and symbolic flower in our state and city and are native to this region. To us they portray strength, hope, beauty and resilience. ALMA in collaboration with La Academia De Esperanza Charter High School, created painted and handmade ceramic tile sunflowers around the South Valley, 12 & Mountain area and beyond. Our apprentices and students come from these areas and it would by an artwork for them, by them to promote ownership and pride in beautifying their community. We hope this is just the beginning of what we would like to continue across Burque. Join us on our "florista" journey. *Shakur, Tupac The Rose Grew from the Concrete. Natalie Voelker
made at rear wall of 901 12th Street NW (12th&Granite NW), albuquerque
Reviving the Desert Sunset is a community-centered visual art project revolving around some of the people who grew up in the neighborhood surrounding the old Desert Sunset Fabric Design building. The building, built in 1946, is at the corner of Granite Ave and 12th Street. Natalie interviewed long-time residents of the neighborhood and wove the stories they share into a temporary hand-drawn charcoal mural on the back of the building. The mural also flows off of the building and onto the ground of the adjacent vacant lot by continuing the drawing on the ground with black sand. The temporary, sit-specific, mural and sand installation contain a portrait of either a current or historical resident of the neighborhood – determined by the interviews with residents – as well as drawings other organic elements, such as plant forms, that pertain to the narrative learned through the interviews. The charcoal and sand drawings not only revitalize the aesthetics of the area by activating the old building wall and empty lot adjacent to it; they also spark curiosity, inviting current neighborhood residents to engage with the unfolding story of the neighborhood. The creation of the mural and sand installation was documented via time-lapse and became a documentary of the project. The charcoal mural and sand drawings remain on the building and ground until washed away by the elements.

Anna Horst + Mark Horst
made at tiguex park, albuquerque
Over the past two years Mark Horst has been dealing with a life threatening illness. The process has left its marks on his body. By capturing some of these changes through a series of life-sized, sculpted figures, he hopes to reflect on the challenges to his existence. He wants to do this in a way that is inviting rather than off-putting. He wants the sculpture to be inviting and compelling in its own way. This project is a way of softly approaching our precious and fragile life. The entire process was filmed by a local film-maker, Anna Horst. The film is a demonstration of the process of creating the sculpture and also a narrative of the emotional challenges underlying the work.

Friends of the Orphan Signs
made at 35.091742, -106.631749, albuquerque
In Revision, two artist-poets were invited to engage with Albuquerque’s archived photographic history, and to create work that evaluates, responds to, and expands institutionalized historical narratives. Albuquerque artist and poet Sara Rivera chose photos from the ABQ Museum Photo archives to crop and zoom, creating a new composition that alters the context and understanding of the image. The final images are cropped to the proportions of signs on Lomas, which are elongated rectangles. Albuquerque poet Beca Alderete Baca responded to these photos with text; her words are superimposed on the images, offering a new narrative lens into Albuquerque history. The Lomas signs on which the artists’ work will be installed stand in a heavily trafficked part of town, between the freeway and UNMH. The ready access to these signs will give the artists an opportunity to access the kind of visual power that advertisers have, and to shift the cultural narrative in a time that calls for such revisions.

Pueblo Revolt Collective

Billy Joe Miller & Karen Hipscher
made at sandia mountains and around albuquerque
This project is a visual accompaniment to the recently released Diane Cluck song "Learn To Lose." The song, in its poetic and humble folk style, speaks of the inevitability, universality, and different forms of loss in the human experience. At times abstract or light-based, the video reflects on themes of loss, relationship to uncertainty, isolation, and deep transformation - particularly relevant themes in this current pandemic and climate crisis. In making the video, the artists drew from their personal experiences with chronic illness and grief, and art as transformative practice. Using elements in nature, their own bodies, and glass and mirrors to focus and redirect light, the video is a collaborative meditation in conversation with the music. Filming was done at or close to the artists’ homes with objects and creatures in their everyday environment.

Spanish Broom
made at albuquerque y tejas
We envision our project illuminating the many spaces within Albuquerque that strongly unite us and represent who we are and where we come from. Performance must shift now, due to COVID19, yet we know we can continue to create and bloom together. Through our medium of flamenco inspired rhythm, movement, and music we want to relay the sensations that have been overwhelming many of us this year. Isolation, confinement, loneliness, questioning our identities, separation from the ones we love and finding resilience through these challenging times are the motivation for our project. Knowing that we can come together through our artistry is essential for us to continue to create. By layering each individual in different pockets of our city, we can create an effect that shows us separate, safe, but together in harmony. Reflecting upon where we have come from, inspires us to push forward and stand with the movements we know are necessary for our future. We bring Burque what we do best: Familia creating art, amigos working from the heart and honesty and truth ringing throughout. We out here.

Cali Shaw Band & Entropic Industries
made at a culdesac in north valley albuquerque, new mexico Albuquerque Based Singer-Songwriter Cali Shaw and Architect Jared Winchester are next-door neighbors in North Valley ABQ NM. SOMOS Reimagined creates a unique opportunity for the pair to collaborate in a social distanced manner and produce a magical performance piece to be shared online during SOMOS Reimagined. Jared's team Entropic Industries created a surreal and immersive light installment as a stage for Cali Shaw Band to record a live music performance within. The stage was setup in a North Valley Culdesac and consisted of tree-like trunks and steel branches with fiber optic light cables strewn throughout. The fiber optic cables illuminate in color and create a connection between the individual steel trees branches and musicians from Cali Shaw Band. The imagery of the fiber optic tree and performance convey a theme of connectedness while being separated; a theme prevalent in modern-day COVID-19 life.

As many musicians and venues have been hit hard by the loss of live music due to the pandemic, the band wanted to show gratitude to Mr. Anderson for his longtime support of developing and showcasing local talent. With the beautiful setting of Downtown Central Avenue, aka Historic Route 66, as the background, the group chose a set bursting with energy that pays homage to the city that made them who they are.

SOMOS SWEET DREAMS
together we **can**
{re} imagine & make real
the world we wish to exist.

Dear Albuquerque: Words are not sufficient to convey our gratitude; we are infinitely thankful to you for inspiring and making this magic possible -- we are not surprised and are yet astounded, how you shine so bright amidst even the darkest.

Dear Featured Alumni: YOU GLORIOUS JEWELS, you brilliant artists, performers, and creators of Albuquerque, thank you for sharing so generously of yourselves, for weaving these most beautiful testaments to love, to expression, to community. You are the soul of SOMOS and the soul of our city, and you spark us all alight.

Dear Partners, Collaborators & Sponsors: Every day you embody and radiate that to invest in arts, culture, identity, expression, and exchange is to generate learning, healing, opportunity, truth, and justness; that is, to nourish humanity — and the realization of our highest individual and collective potentials. Thank you for believing and being change.

SOMOS Familia, SOMOS Albuquerque.
